Fallen arches and flat foot – description

The pathological changes which occur with fallen arches and flat foot involve a lowering of the foot’s arch (fallen arches = the longitudinal arch has sunk slightly, or flat foot = the longitudinal arch has completely sunk). They are one of most common pathological changes and are amongst the most common foot disorders in Western societies. They often occur simultaneously, hence why the terms are often used interchangeably. There is a hereditary version of flat foot, which is quite rare and then an additional type of the ailment which develops over time i.e. over the course of one’s life.

Fallen arches and flat foot – causes

Fallen arches or flat foot which develops over time is usually caused by problems with the muscles and ligaments. The main cause of this is a lack of proper exercise, for example sitting permanently and constantly wearing shoes or having shoes that do not allow the feet sufficient space to move, obesity, prolonged standing or weakness of the connective tissue. The cause is usually down to a combination of the above points. As you can see, a lack of exercise and obesity are recurring issues when it comes to all illnesses.

Fallen arches and flat foot – prevention

The most effective method of prevention is movement, and lots of it. Taking a break from wearing shoes and walking barefoot and also choosing comfortable shoes, which do not inhibit the natural rolling behaviours.
