SHOE POLISH

Anti-ageing for your shoes

    4.2/5 179

Just like our skin, leather also needs regular care in order to stay soft, durable and crease-free. The same goes for our shoes. Those who regularly take the time to polish their shoes provide them with suppleness and elasticity whilst protecting them from moisture.

Regular wear causes your high-quality leather shoes to gradually lose their colour freshness and become permanently damaged as a result of cracks and scratches. You can use shoe polish to remove cracks, scratches, colour abrasions or coarse wrinkles from your high-quality leather shoes. With the right shoe polish, you will not only be able to conceal signs of wear and improve the shoe’s appearance, but you will also be able to protect your high-quality leather shoes from becoming damaged in the future. Shoe polish replenishes oils and fats that are lost from the shoe and prevents the leather becoming saturated with moisture or water. It is particularly useful to use shoe polish and wax during the autumn and winter in order to avoid water marks on the leather. Water rolls straight off shoes that have been freshly polished or waxed, making it all the more important for protecting your shoes on rainy or snowy days. It is important to note, however, that using the right shoe polish should still not be used in place of impregnating your shoes.

The difference between shoe polish and shoe wax

The terms shoe polish and shoe wax are often used interchangeably in everyday language. Whilst both are used to maintain your high-quality leather shoes, there are, in fact, some differences between the two. Shoe polish has a thinner consistency and can therefore penetrate deeper into the shoe leather but shoe wax, however, acts mainly superficially.

The high percentage of wax contained makes shoe wax perfect for maintaining the aesthetic of your high quality leather shoes, giving them a distinctive shine. You only need to look at shoe polish and shoe wax to recognise their differences in consistency. Whilst shoe polish is usually very soft and is sold in tubes or plastic containers, shoe wax is very hard and is usually contained in tin cans.

Do you use a brush or cloth to apply shoe polish?

Before we explain how to carry out the application process, it is first important to clarify what you should use in order to apply shoe polish. When it comes to shoe polish and shoe wax, there is only one correct answer – both a cloth and a shoe brush are necessary for this process.

We recommend a shoe cleaning cloth for the larger areas of your high-quality shoes. When polishing the seams, shoe sole and detailing, however, you will quickly realise that a cloth alone is not enough to apply the polish to all the hard-to-reach areas. We recommend using a small brush for these areas. Even the fiddliest areas of your high-quality leather shoes are taken care of thanks to the fine bristles.

Applying shoe polish correctly:

let’s start with the most important thing to note when applying shoe polish and shoe wax. Both care products must be applied sparingly. Shoe care is for shoes what moisturising is for your skin. When you use too much product, then the leather can no longer absorb the excess shoe polish or shoe wax.

Pay attention to colour when buying shoe polish. If in doubt, you cannot go wrong with a colourless polish. For best results, it is necessary to thoroughly clean any dirt and dust particles from the shoe before applying shoe polish.

To polish the larger areas, wrap one or two fingers in a polishing cloth – this is the best way to ensure that the shoe polish is optimally distributed across the leather. Use a shoe brush to access the hard-to-reach areas and massage in the polish.

Let your shoes stand for a good hour after rubbing in the polish so that it can really penetrate the leather.

Shoe polish or shoe wax – which care product is best suited to your shoes?

Due to the two different uses of shoe polish and shoe wax, we recommend first using a suitable shoe polish to optimally maintain your high-quality leather shoes, and, as stated above, allow your shoe to really absorb the polish. This should be followed by applying suitable shoe wax, which must be carefully buffed after application. This is how your high-quality leather shoes get their distinctive shine.

You should remember, however, that it is not enough to only carry out this process with shoe polish and shoe wax once. Even high-quality leather must be regularly and carefully maintained.

Cleaning your shoes correctly

Shoe cleaning is an art in itself and a task that fewer and fewer people are unfortunately taking the time to do. This is a shame because shoes are at their best when they are cleaned and maintained well. Not only this, but we also believe that it puts people in good stead and gives off a neat and orderly overall impression to not only take pride in their outer clothing, but also keep their footwear well-maintained. “Smart up top, casual on the bottom” is not a motto that we recommend following for your style inspiration, even with laid-back fashion trends that are popular nowadays.
